Fix: Bizarre Drobo FS Problem

Bought a new Drobo FS yesterday to go with my FW800 Drobo 2.

Got the device home, slapped in a few disks (1x WD Green 2TB, 1x Seagate Barracuda LP 2TB, 2x WD Caviar 250GB) and started up the machine.

Response was 5 disturbing red lights on the face of the FS and an odd message from Drobo Dashboard: Unknown Disk Set Version.  The system prompted me to check for new Dashboard software and device firmware, which I permitted, but no change in status.

Filed a support request with Data Robotics through their notoriously secretive process (unlike the public forums that every other tech company on the planet uses) and got a call from a tech support guy today.  Although he professed to having no idea what the problem actually was, he proposed the following procedure to try to solve the issue:

1. Power down the FS using the back switch (hold in the off position for a few seconds);
2. Disconnect the power and ethernet cables from the back of the FS;
3a. Insert and hold a paper clip in the little reset hole;
3b. Reinsert the power lead;
3c. Power up the FS;
3d. Wait for all lights to turn green (note that "green" on the FS is a proper bright green while the "green" on a regular Drobo is more similar to "yellow" on the FS).  Startup should take a minute or 2 and the little blue capacity lights will dance about a bit;
4. Remove the paperclip;
5. Power down the FS using the back switch (I actually forgot to do this part, but probably best to follow all instructions to be on the safe side);
6. Insert ethernet;
7. Power on.

This worked for me.  As always, YMMV.
